Common Drill Rod Connection Failure Causes: Review Checklist

16 Jul 2026

Do not judge a failure from one close-up photo

A useful review needs the complete rod, the damaged area, both mating threads and the operating record. Similar-looking failures can have different causes, and one image rarely shows the full load path.

Information to collect

  • Rod drawing, thread, OD, wall and length
  • Position of the failed rod in the string
  • Rig, rotary torque, pullback and feed information
  • Hole diameter, depth, inclination and formation
  • Service hours or footage and previous re-use
  • Make-up practice, lubrication and handling method

Photograph the evidence

Take overall photographs before cleaning or modifying the parts. Add clear views of the fracture surface, thread flanks, shoulder, body wear, bending and the mating component. Mark the drilling direction and failure location.

Common review areas

The technical review may consider connection mismatch, make-up condition, excessive wear, bending, overload, impact damage, corrosion, manufacturing condition and the combined effect of the drilling environment. This list is not a remote diagnosis; it is a structure for collecting evidence.

Prevent a repeat order mismatch

After the review, keep the confirmed drawing, connection record and inspection requirements with the account. Replacement parts should follow the released specification rather than a shortened product description.

Please contact us before placing an order if you need a custom size, special thread, OEM logo, or project quotation. Product specifications, lead time, package and shipping details will be confirmed in the quotation. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Please contact us for details is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Please contact us for details as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
