How to Select PDC Bit Diameter and API Connection for Water Wells?

A correct cutting structure is useless if the bit diameter does not match the casing program or the connection does not match the drill string. Diameter and thread details should be confirmed from measurements and equipment records, not from a photograph.

Specify both millimetres and inches, identify the exact pin or box connection, and verify the rig's torque and make-up procedure. Nominal trade descriptions are not a substitute for thread gauges or drawings.

Selecting the working diameter

The bit must create the planned bore while allowing the casing and cementing program to proceed. Consider expected gauge wear, formation swelling, deviation and whether a pilot hole or reaming stage is involved.

Large-diameter PDC bits require more torque and hydraulic cleaning. A diameter that physically fits the rig may still exceed practical pump, feed or drill-string limits.

Confirming the connection

API REG connections are common in water-well tooling, but sizes are not interchangeable. Record the full designation, pin or box orientation and shoulder condition. If the tool uses a proprietary or local thread, provide a drawing or measured sample.

Make-up torque transfers load through the connection. Incorrect torque, damaged threads or mismatched shoulders can cause loosening, fatigue or downhole loss even when the bit itself is correctly designed.

  1. Confirm casing and final bore requirements.
  2. Measure actual bit OD requirement.
  3. Record drill-pipe OD, ID and thread.

  • Confusing nominal diameter with measured OD.
  • Using an approximate thread name.
  • Ignoring shoulder damage.
  • Ordering a large bit without checking pump capacity.

The number of blade on a drill bit is not the only influencing factor

Two bits with the same number of blades can deliver very different drilling behaviour. Cutter diameter, grade, back rake, exposure and spacing change aggressiveness and impact tolerance. Crown profile controls how weight is distributed from the centre to the shoulder, while gauge length and side protection influence hole quality and directional response.

Body material, hardfacing, port design and total flow area also affect durability and cleaning. Connection type, bit diameter and the bottom-hole assembly determine how the design interacts with the rig. For this reason, a blade-count keyword is useful for finding a design family, but it is not a complete engineering specification.

How to validate the selection in the field

Begin with conservative operating parameters and establish a stable baseline. Record rotary speed, feed or weight on bit, torque response, pump pressure, return flow and the appearance of cuttings. Change one major variable at a time so the response can be understood. A short increase in penetration is not valuable if torque becomes unstable or cutters overheat.

After the run, measure gauge and photograph every blade in order. Compare the dull condition with the depth-based drilling record. This closes the loop between selection, operation and redesign and provides better evidence than an unsupported statement that a bit was “fast” or “long-lasting.”
