Tricone Bit Operating Inputs: WOB, RPM and Circulation

16 Jul 2026

Operating inputs belong in the selection process

A tricone bit should be discussed with the planned weight on bit, rotary speed and circulation. These values interact with formation, cutting structure, bearing, diameter and rig capability. The final operating limits must follow the confirmed product documentation.

Weight on bit

Record the rig's controllable range and the value used with the current bit. Too little or too much load can change how the cutting structure engages the formation and how the cones and bearings are loaded. Do not copy a value from an unrelated model.

Rotary speed

State the available RPM range, the stable working range and whether the formation changes downhole. Rotary speed should be considered with bit diameter, cutting structure and load rather than as an isolated target.

Circulation

Describe the medium, pump or compressor, available flow and pressure, nozzle arrangement and any history of poor cleaning, erosion or blocked flow. Effective cuttings removal and bit cooling are part of the system review.

Send a complete operating record

  • Bit diameter, type and connection
  • Formation intervals and drilling response
  • WOB, RPM and circulation range
  • Rig, pump or compressor information
  • Penetration trend and wear photographs

Technical sales can use this record to compare a new configuration without presenting an unrelated performance claim.

Please contact us before placing an order if you need a custom size, special thread, OEM logo, or project quotation. Product specifications, lead time, package and shipping details will be confirmed in the quotation. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Please contact us for details is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Please contact us for details as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
