Water-well and geothermal drilling can pass through unconsolidated overburden, weathered zones, competent rock and fractured intervals in the same hole. The selection process should therefore begin with the finished diameter, target depth, casing plan, expected formation sequence and the available drilling method. A single product name is not enough to define the working system.
Rotary mud drilling, air rotary, DTH drilling, reverse circulation and coring each place different demands on the rig, drill string, circulation equipment and bit. Site access, water availability, sample requirement, borehole stability and casing installation can also change the preferred method. Confirm the planned method before comparing bits or rigs.
A field result is useful only when the formation, rig, circulation, diameter and tool configuration are comparable. Use the case library as a reference point, then confirm the differences with technical sales rather than assuming the same penetration or service life.
