Mining & Coal Exploration Drilling

Define the purpose of the hole

Mining and coal-exploration holes may support geological confirmation, drainage, blasting, anchoring, sampling or production planning. The hole objective determines whether penetration, directional control, sample quality, borehole stability or service life should receive the highest priority.

Formation variability matters

Mine drilling can move through coal measures, sandstone, mudstone, limestone, fractured zones and abrasive inclusions. Record changes in hardness, integrity, abrasiveness and water inflow. A tool selected for one interval may not be suitable for the whole hole.

Connect the product to the system

  • PDC drill bits: compare geometry, cutter layout, body protection, flushing and connection for the expected formation.
  • DTH systems: confirm hole diameter, hammer and shank, compressor pressure and flow, and rock condition.
  • Tricone bits: review TCI or milled-tooth cutting structure, bearing, connection and the planned WOB, RPM and circulation window.
  • Drill rods: match thread, diameter, wall and handling length to the rig and hole.
  • Rigs: define mobility, working envelope, rotary head, feed and pullback together with the selected method.

Buyer checklist

  • Hole purpose, diameter, depth and inclination
  • Expected formation sequence and problem intervals
  • Rig model and available operating range
  • Air, water, mud or another circulation method
  • Connection and existing drill-string dimensions
  • Quantity, shift conditions and delivery destination
