How to Specify a Water-Well Drilling Rig

16 Jul 2026

Begin with the well program

State the target depth, finished diameter, casing plan and expected formation sequence. Water-well rigs should be compared against the complete drilling and completion method, not only a catalogue depth figure.

Define the drilling method

Air rotary, DTH, mud rotary, reverse circulation and coring require different rotary, feed, pullback and circulation support. A multipurpose rig can cover more than one method, but the required compressor, pump, rods, hammer, bits and handling equipment must still be confirmed.

Rig information to compare

  • Practical depth and diameter for the planned method
  • Rotary torque and speed range
  • Feed force, pullback and mast stroke
  • Rod length and handling arrangement
  • Carrier, footprint, terrain and transport limits
  • Compressor, mud pump and auxiliary equipment
  • Operator access, maintenance and local support needs

Account for the site

Send photographs or drawings when access, slope, headroom, platform capacity or transport width is restricted. Altitude and ambient conditions can affect the available air package and should be included when DTH drilling is planned.

Request a system quotation

Separate the base rig, drill string, bits, hammer, compressor or pump, tools, spare parts and training requirements. A clear scope makes quotations easier to compare and reduces missing equipment at delivery.

Please contact us before placing an order if you need a custom size, special thread, OEM logo, or project quotation. Product specifications, lead time, package and shipping details will be confirmed in the quotation. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Please contact us for details is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Please contact us for details as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
